Google places a very specific weight on a site’s linking in its search engine algorithm. The sites that link to the home site may have positive or negative effect on the site’s ranking. In the past the algorithm looked at the quantity of links to determine popularity and thereby deciding the appropriate ranking. This created a phenomenon where web marketers created an entire industry based on selling hundreds or thousands of links. Google realized this trend and upgraded the algorithm to look at the quality and relevance of the links to better determine the actual rating as opposed to simply counting the inbound links. Many business owners are unaware that their past and present practices are hurting their SEO efforts. This is mainly due to limited education on the business owner side and sleazy and deceptive marketing campaigns on the web marketer’s side. In fact, the practice Google sees this abuse as a violation of their Webmaster Guidelines. Google now places more weight in its algorithm on links that come from businesses in the same industry or general topic, links from reputable websites and so forth.

Not all inbound links are the same! Google’s Search Engine Algorithm rates the quality and relevancy of each link to ensure popularity is not “purchased”. Larry Page, after whom the term “PageRank” was coined, describes Google as “understanding exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want.” This aim is the leading factor behind Google’s ever changing algorithm. In the past the quantity of links was a heavy factor until web marketers abused the criteria and Google was pressed to change the algorithm.

Today, Google likes quality link that come from different sources and do originate in “spamy“ sites. In fact, a website achieving hundreds or thousands is not looked at favorably. Google likes links that are created over time from multiple sources, preferably from similar content sites.

In the last few years a practice has develop of inbound linking websites that place links within the words of relevant articles. This practice in its core is beneficial since Google likes the links to come from websites with relevant content. However, the execution of this practice is poor. These companies have tens of thousands of articles where they can place any imaginable keyword. The problem in their execution is the fact that their content is duplicated. These companies will not go into the expense of developing original content for each and every customer, they simply duplicate their content with minutes differences and change the article’s title. Google is able to recognize the duplicate content and disregard it, deeming the link useless. When using such a company a webmaster must ensure that the content is not duplicated.

Many frivolous websites provide a myriad of inbound link services. Many are taken for the quick way of developing so many inbound links and increasing search engine rankings. However, for the novice webmasters and business owners trying to do their own SEO, these sites are not indexed by Google and Yahoo search engines and therefore provide little benefit. If you deem that the best way to boost your SEO efforts is through such a service ensure the page where your links reside are indexed by Google and Yahoo, otherwise they are useless.

There are several ways of linking websites for the purpose of SEO. These methods become more and more creative as Google’s Algorithm catches up with the webmasters exploiting them. Google’s algorithm must remain one step a head to ensure that the search results they provide are relevant and useful, otherwise people would stop using them.

The Reciprocal Link

Reciprocal linking is a common way to develop inbound links for a website. The term is self explanatory and simply means that webmasters from two different websites decide that they would like to exchange links. From an SEO perspective Google likes this type of linking, especially if the two sites are competent as far as content. If a site has 200 reciprocal links with websites that have little to no commonalities the benefit for the ranking will be small to non-existent.

The One Way Link

On way linking is simply referred as the practice of having an inbound link to a website without surrendering a link to point to the originating website. This method is a great method to increase natural SEO and page popularity. Google’s algorithm likes this inbound linking method when the links are relevant. If a site has hundreds or thousands of irrelevant links their Page Rank could suffer.

With SEO in mind, inbound links are very important, since Google’s search engine algorithm uses the quality and quantity of inbound links to rank the website’s popularity and relevance. Sites that want to rank higher on Google should pay close attention to their inbound link quantity and quality. The worthiness of the links will have a greatly impact Google’s decision to promote or penalize the site based on inbound links.
